2023 STP-CABE Joint Working Group: The Market-Ready Psychology Major

(page created January 11, 2024)

STP President (2023) Diane Finley collaborated with the American Psychological Association's Committee on Associate and Baccalaureate Education (CABE) to convene a joint STP-CABE working group to develop resources that address skills described in The Skillful Psychology Student.

The Skillful Psychology Student (SPS) identifies 17 workforce-ready skills that are provided in a typical psychology curriculum. The mission of the STP-CABE joint working group was to create resources for psychology’s most common courses that would help instructors emphasize to students the key skills from the Skillful Psychology Student they are developing in that course. This information would help articulate for students what transferable skills they have gained, and how they have gained them, from specific courses.

The joint working group focused on nine core psychology courses and created template materials that instructors can either use as-is or further customize for their own courses. Importantly, the key skills identified for each course are not meant to imply that these are the skills that should be emphasized in these courses, or that they are the only skills developed in these courses. The goal of the working group was to focus on three to four skills for each course that they believed were the most applicable, based on their own experiences and expertise.

Resources Prepared by the Working Group

  • Syllabus Inserts: One-page documents that describe the skills, how they are developed in the course, and how they are applied in the workplace; see below for links to syllabus inserts for many courses.
  • PowerPoint Slides: Include information from the syllabus inserts, links to specific careers, and first day and last day of class activities (e.g., interview prep); see below for links to slides for many courses.
  • Resume and CV Templates: Provide examples of how students can include skills in these documents.
